Turn To Vegan For Healthy Kidney System
A new study held in USA says that vegetarian diet can low phosphorus levels of toxins or even protect the people from having kidney diseases. Patients of kidney diseases should low the intake of phosphorus because the high level of minerals can lead to heart diseases or even to death. Medical guidelines advise low phosphorus diet for patients with chronic kidney diseases. Shoran Moe and her colleagues at Indiana University School of Medicine did research about the effects of vegetarian and non-vegetarian diet on phosphorus levels in a group of nine patients having CKD (chronic kidney diseases).
Patients were asked to follow a vegetarian diet for a week and after that non-vegetarian diet for one to four weeks. Blood together with urine test was done at the end of each week on both types of diet. Patients had lower phosphorus levels & decreased phosphorus excretion in the urine when the patients were on vegetarian diet than non-vegetarian diet. Shoran Moe came to a conclusion that the source of protein in diet has a noteworthy effect on phosphorus levels in patients having chronic kidney diseases.
The above mentioned study advises patients with kidney diseases that well planning of vegetarian diet is safe as well as helpful in management of chronic kidney diseases. The planning of vegetarian diet should be based on these three:
- Obtain the right amount of plant protein
- keep a proper balance of sodium, potassium & phosphorus
- maintain a good nutrition. The following information is the initial guide to patients having kidney diseases at early stage.
Quality Protein : Modify the amount of protein you take. Plant protein demands less on kidney clearance. It means protein obtained from vegetarian diet is better than protein obtained from non-vegetarian diet. Try to keep from 8 to .8 gram of protein per one Kilogram of bodyweight. If your weight is 70 kg then you should take 56 grams of protein. Soy protein is beneficial because it minimizes some complications of chronic kidney diseases. Try to include soy protein in your diet. You can take milk as a substitute.
Sodium, Potassium & Phosphorus : Vegetarian diet is beneficial but some contain very high level of sodium. You should avoid some foods like frozen meals, dried soup, soy-based cheese, salt, soy sauce, etc. You should not stop or decrease the amount of potassium till the function of your kidneys goes down 20. You should go regularly for blood test to know the need of potassium. Protein obtained from some plants contains high phosphorus. Rice milk and soy milk can be used as a substitute of milk.
Good Nutrition : Normally vegetarian diet is lower in calories & higher in fiber than non-vegetarian diet. You need not to lose your weight. Consult an expert dietitian and follow his or her instructions. This will be beneficial for your kidneys.
