Augment To Raise Social Ties At Work

The secret of job satisfaction is not about the work you do but the people you do it with.

A relationship is generally seen as a bond between two persons like romantic or intimate relationship, or parent-child relationship. Persons have several other relationships with groups of individuals like a mayor and town, friendship, an uncle and a family. There is also a relationship between employees of an organization. The employees of that organization have to create a relationship named as colleagues for creating a good working environment. There is interdependence between the employees which make them to help each other if the job requires so. If the job doesn't require making a relationship related to work, even a relationship takes place among employees working in the same organization for a long time. Social relation can be created by offering team work or joint projects.

Some researches show that social contact is important for the organization. A study was conducted at Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University. Morgeson and his colleagues asked a questionnaire based on categories like task characteristics, how the work is done, knowledge characteristics, the skill & abilities necessary to do the work, social elements as how often the job allows interactions with others. Participants were taken from different areas like medical, teaching and construction. At the end of the study, the author found that social factors like interactions between colleagues had more importance to job satisfaction. Social relation had created moral value in employees. Morgeson says, "Employers can't always redesign a job to make it less boring or to allow more autonomy, but they can encourage changes in the social environment by encouraging employee interaction and teamwork." Social support can make low pay. Morgeson again notes, "Social support not only predicted satisfaction beyond the task and knowledge characteristics, but it was also unrelated to training and compensation requirements, so it is kind of a no-cost improvement."

Whatever the study has suggested, it is true that social relation at work has its own importance. It offers opportunities to share personal experiences of professional life among colleagues. It breaks a barrier between senior & junior and helps in making a good relation at work. A good relation at work helps in creating a good working environment which is beneficial for the organization as well as for the employees. Having some negatives, social relation helps in increasing the productivity of the organization.
