Delhi University

The University of Delhi, popularly also known as ‘DU’, is one of the most prestigious, largest, and popular Central Universities of India. Established in the year 1922, the University of Delhi with about 80 well-established colleges in its purview and supervision, is presently one of the most famous universities of the world (it was ranked 371 by the THES – QS world universities ranking, in the year 2010), which has been offering higher education and research studies in most of the liberal and illustrious disciplines at par with the International standards to the students, professionals, and scholars of India and abroad.

The University of Delhi, at present, has two study campuses in the northern and southern part of the Delhi city, which are known as the North Campus and the South Campus respectively. Considered as the nucleus of the University of Delhi, the North Campus is the larger one and contains greater number of eminent and popular colleges of Delhi in its ambit. The north campus is well-connected with the Delhi Metro, and is in the vicinity of ISBT and Delhi Vidhan Sabha. The University of Delhi is now thinking of establishing East and West campuses for further better education and research in the fields of Medical Sciences and Engineering & Technology respectively. Spread in every region of the Delhi city, are its constituent colleges, which can be broadly classified into the categories of the colleges funded and maintained by the University of Delhi, the Delhi government colleges, and the colleges maintained by diverse trusts.

Spread over an area of about 70 acres near Dhaula Kuan (in South Delhi), the South Campus of the University of Delhi, is most prominently known for its excellent courses in the Life Sciences, in addition to a large number of diverse courses for the undergraduates, post-graduates, professionals, and scholars in the subjects of History, Sanskrit, Philosophy, English, Hindi, Political Science, Commerce and Mathematics, Business Administration, Business Economics, and Finance and Control.

The South Campus with its well-established and well-equipped departments of the Plant Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology, has been conducting and running diverse master’s and doctoral degree courses and programs in the sophisticated fields of Plant Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Information Technology, Electronics, and various other subjects. Its Biotech centre is one of the best centers of India, which also facilitates industry integrated research, in addition to running a variety of related courses.

With the help of these faculties and departments the University of Delhi provides about 450 different courses at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Ph.D., M.Phil., Diploma and Certificate levels, through its more than 80 small and big colleges spread all across the Delhi city. Its School of Open learning (SOL), established in 1962, is a leader in providing university level education through the distance learning mode to students and professionals of India and abroad. These courses and education programs are liberal, technical, specific, and specialization courses in the humanities, social sciences, science, commerce, technology, and many more.

Delhi University Library System (DULS)

Dedicated to the motto of the University of Delhi, is its Delhi University Library System (DULS). DULS has been providing and facilitating necessary education and information to its students, teachers, and research scholars of various hierarchy levels, through its well-established 34 libraries, high-quality electronic databases, and advanced web services. Currently, there are over 60 such electronic databases in use for online connection, and some 20 more sophisticated databases are easily accessible besides these, through the UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium. Moreover, DULS has been utilizing Information Literacy Programs (ILP) regularly, for the exclusive benefits of the persons concerned. Delhi University Admissions

Admissions to all the Undergraduate courses offered by the constituent colleges of the University of Delhi are scheduled by the announcements of the University which start from the month of May every year. Generally, admissions to the regular undergraduate courses in the desired disciplines are made in the interval June-July, as the academic session of the University of Delhi starts from the July 21, every year. The Dean of concerned faculty is the supervisor regarding the admission to the courses offered by the university. From the year 2011, there are available provisions of preregistration for the desired admission. No entrance examinations are conducted for admission to any of the colleges of Delhi University at undergraduate level, scores of the Higher Secondary School Examination recognized by the State or Central Boards of Secondary Education are considered as the basis. Admissions made through entrance examination, as is with the course of B.A. (H) English, follow a different schedule.

Colleges of Delhi University have the discretion and exclusive privilege to decide the minimum marks required (cut off percentage) for admissions to the courses provided by them, in accord with the University. Consideration of excellence in Sports or some Extra-curricular activities is made during the admission under these categories. Provisions of reservation for SC, ST, and Handicapped, as decided by the Government of India, are strictly followed during the admissions.

Different admission procedures are followed for admission to the Post-Graduate courses offered by the colleges of Delhi universities. The Dean of the desired faculty is the main source of information and advice, regarding admission to such courses.
