Happy Mahashivratri 2012

Mahashivratri is a festival that celebrated as birthday of Lord Shiva. In 2012, it will be observed on 20th February with a festivity tribute around the country. The arrangement of Puja is almost finished in most cities in India at many temples. Millions of Hindu devotees celebrate the festival dedicatedly with applying all rituals as bathing, fasting and prayers. People usually multitude at temples in thousands during the day of Mahashivratri with waiting in long line up to offer prayers and pour milk on the Shivalingams.

The festival is celebrated according to Hindu calendar for one or two days before new moon in the month of February and March (also called as month of Phalgun). According to Hindu mythology, it is a day when Shiva married to Parvathi. According to Radha Misra, a homemaker in Delhi, "Mahashivratri is celebrated during the whole night with hum mantra and prayers. I used to get up at four in the morning and go to the nearby Shiva temple to present prayers. I do arrangement already for special sweets to present to Lord Shiva and for the occasion".

Festive has great importance amongst Hindu cultures. It is also believed that truthful devotion of Lord Shiva on this day forgives one of all sins while women and young girls continue a daylong fast on this day, said Pawan, Delhi's St. Stephens College’s student.
