BJP wins the 2012 MCD election

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put on an impressive victory on Tuesday by retaining control over Delhi Municipality Corporations, winning all three newly-carved civic bodies. For the Congress, it was yet another debacle, having failed to unseat the Shiv Sena-BJP combine in the civic polls of Mumbai. But the BJP’s performance was indeed heartening for the party’s decision-makers. The party’s councillors won a majority of the wards in North and East Delhi. In South Delhi, it failed to reach the halfway mark but was in a position to form the board with help from the Independents. In all, the BJP won 138 of the 272 wards in the three civic bodies, an impressive feat without doubt. Of course, five years ago the BJP had won the municipal polls but had lost the assembly elections to Sheila Dikshit a year later. The civic results are not necessarily an indication of the expected trend in the assembly polls which follow. Sheila Dikshit as a chief ministerial candidate easily outclassed the BJP’s projected CM nominee Vijay Malhotra in 2008.
