Google Laurels Makeba With Doodle

Google on Monday remembered the fabled South African singer and civil rights social reformer Miriam Makeba on her 81st birthday with a colorful doodle. Today's Google doodle consists Miriam Makeba attired in her conventional dress and in a singing attitude.

Miriam Makeba, famously known as Mama Africa, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on March 4, 1932. She created the African music favorite and well-liked around the globe. For her efforts to the music world, Miriam was bestowed with the esteemed Grammy Award in 1966, for the Best Folk Recording.

1950 was a epochal year for Miriam as she created her first professional appearance and facade in the Manhattan Brothers, a South African jazz group. But finally she left the jazz group and united The Skylarks, a all-woman group, to sing South African conventional melodies and jazz. After singing for various years, in 1956, Makeba issued the song 'Pata Pata', which turned an instantaneous hit and is now reasoned to be her signature hit. The sound Pata Pata' was composed by Dorothy Masuka, Makeba's fellow southern African creator.

Miriam Makeba supported the movement against the South African system of social policy and also take part actively in the anti-apartheid campaign. Due to Makeba's involvement in the anti-aparthied move, her citizenship was reneged and she had to leave her homeland and direct a life in exile. However, she came back to South Africa after the release of Nelson Mandela. During her life, Makeba composed numerous songs which were normally a blend of R&B, pop, jazz and African music.

Her devoted and specific work was so gratifying that she was nominated as the Goodwill Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organization on October 16, 1999, by the United Nations. In 1962, she even executed at President John F Kennedy's birthday function. She even take part in movements calling in aid to give new lease of life to child soldiers and children troubled from HIV/AIDS.

With her age, her health decayed. She yet passed away by cause of heart attack on November 9, 2008.
