Veterans Day

Veterans Day, yearly holiday in the United States of America, is celebrated to honor military veterans. It is also known as Remembrance Day and Armistice Day and celebrated on the 11th November every year. This holiday is printed as Veterans’ Day or Veteran’s Day in newspapers and advertisement.

Veterans Day history is not very old. It was Woodrow Wilson, the president of America, who announced first an Armistice Day for the 11th November in 1919. While announcing Armistice Day as a holiday, he said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations”. After seven years, the United States congress passed a resolution on June 4, 1926 and requested the President to make an announcement that 11th November would be observe as a holiday devoted to the peace of the world. And after that announcement, 11th November was celebrated as yearly holiday and known as Armistice Day.

An idea came into Kansas Alvin King’s mind, who was the owner of a shoe shop. He wanted to extend Armistice Day celebration which was only dedicated to the veterans died in the World War 1. He wanted that 11th November to be celebrated to honor all the veterans. He started a campaign demanding Armistice Day should be converted into all Veterans Day. The Emporia Chamber of Commerce, 90 % of merchants and boards of education supported to his campaign and decided to take off on that day. A bill was passed through the congress and the contemporary President Dwight Eisenhower signed on that bill. The congress amended that bill on June 1, 1954 and Armistice Day started to be known as Veterans Day. Since then the 11th November has been celebrated as Veterans Day. Some changes occurred in celebration of Veterans Day between 1971 and 1978 but originally it got the status as Veterans Day and now it is celebrated on the 11th November every year.
