Punjab University

The Punjab University, prominently also known as the ‘PU’, is one of the oldest, largest, reputed, and immensely popular universities of India, with wide and close International contacts and reputation. Punjab University is one of the most acclaimed Indian centers for education and research in Bio-Medical Sciences, Energy Research, and Super-Computing facilities. Punjab University has been one of the earliest institutions teaching Engineering in India. Currently, its University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), is among the top engineering colleges of India, which has been ranked 31 by the Outlook MDRA Survey 2011. Moreover, the University Institute for Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET), is one of the most prestigious and popular institutions in India for Chemical Engineering stream.

Punjab University (PU) commands a long laudable tradition of pursuing excellence in the education and research in the subjects of Humanities, Science and Technology, Social Sciences, and performing arts and sports. Initially established in the year 1882 at Lahore (which is now in Pakistani Punjab), the PU became an Inter-State Body Corporate in the year 1966 with the re-organization of Indian Punjab. Today, the maintenance deficit of the Punjab University is shared by both the Union Territory Administration of Chandigarh and the State Govt. of Punjab in the ratio of 60:40 respectively. At present, Punjab University has over 175 affiliated constituent colleges in all across the States of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, in addition to a large number of well-established colleges in the U.T. of Chandigarh.

Here, it may be noted that the wording Punjab University, Chandigarh, is often confused with the word combinations of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana; Punjab Technical University; Punjabi University, Patiala; University of the Punjab, Lahore; and, the University of Central Punjab, Lahore.

Faculties/Departments and PU Courses

The Punjab University campus is spread over an extensive and peaceful area of about 550 acres in the sector 14 and sector 25 of the U.T. of Chandigarh. The main academic and administrative buildings are situated in the sector 14 of the city, together with the residential housing and hostels, a health centre, and a sports complex. Punjab University has 75 spacious and well-equipped teaching and research departments, in addition to 15 Centers/Chairs for teaching and research, located in the main university campus at Chandigarh. Most of the faculties/ departments have their own exclusively specialized libraries. Amply augmented by online resources, the libraries of Punjab University have been collectively acclaimed as one of the most prominent centers of India for the Data-Information-Distribution in the UGC’s INFLIBNET program.

With the help of these faculties and departments, Punjab University, Chandigarh (India) offers a large number of diverse Postgraduate, Graduate, and Diploma courses, apart from the Ph.D and M.Phil courses in a rather wide range of subject options.

The University Business School (UBS) of Punjab University has been established in 1995, to provide MBA courses and Ph.D programs in diverse streams.

Punjab University’s UIET offers many diverse Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral courses in the Engineering streams and Management.

Law courses of LL.B and LL.M are conducted by the Punjab University, through its two separate academic law blocks. For admission to these Punjab University courses, the Graduation degree in any stream with at least 45% marks is pre-requisite, and its law department conducts admission test on the patterns of UPSC. The University Institute of Legal Studies of Punjab University, established in 2004, has currently 180 seats for the five-year integrated law course of B.A. LL.B (Hons.).

The National Centre for Human Genome Studies and Research (NCHGSR) of Punjab University provides Postgraduate and Ph.D Research courses and programs in the fields of molecular biology, biotechnology, genomics, and proteomics to Indian and International students and scholars.
