A popular Hindu Festival is Dussehra or Vijay Dashmi is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all across the country. Dussehra festival also popular as Vijay Dashami, comes after nine Navratra days. It is a day which symbolizes the truth’s defeat of evil. Indian calendar reflects that this festival is celebrated on the tenth day in Shukla Paksha of the month, Ashwin. Generally, every year Dussehra falls in the September or October months.

All festivities celebrate this and the victory of the forces of Good over Evil. It is considered to be an auspicious day to begin new things in life.All that is good in mankind is centralizing in the deeds of the god Ram, the prince of Ayodhya.

Legends of Dusshera

The most important reason for the celebration of Vijay Dashmi in northern India is that, on this auspicious day Lord Rama won over the demon king Ravana who had abducted Lord’s wife, Sita. Dussehra festival is referred to as a day which reflects the conquest of righteousness over wickedness

The Second reason is, Vijay Dashami celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the wicked demon Mahishasura. According to legend Mahishasura belonged to Mysore. The history of the festival has its concerning the killing of Mahishasura, who took the form of a buffalo and his colleagues Chanda and Munda also killed by Goddess Kali near the hill. The fight went on for nine days and nights and on the tenth day, Vijay Dashmi falls. Hence, Kali came to be known as Chamundeshwari and the hill where the demons were killed is called as the Chamundi Hill.

The origin of Vijay Dashami can also be considered to the other great Hindu epic Mahabharata. According to the Mahabharata, in the thirteenth year of their exile, The Pandavas had to live in complete concealment. Arjuna the Pandav prince disguised themselves as a eunuch called Brihannala. One year later, when the period of concealment was over, Arjuna retrieved his weapons on the day of Dussehra and the Pandava brothers worshipped the weapons. Thus, the Shammi tree became sacred to the Pandavas and the Maharaja of Mysore
